![]() It's July 4th weekend, it's summer and you're most likely going to take a vacation. But what if you're dieting now? When you're at a party or on vacation it's very easy to be tempted and cheat and sabotage all your progress. So here are 5 tips for continuing your weight loss while celebrating the 4th or while on vacation. 1) Always pack healthy snacks and plan ahead! Whether you're heading to the beach or walking around Disney World or an amusement park - if you get hungry and you smell the savory aromas of fast food, you'll cheat. So instead, nip cravings and hunger in the bud by packing and nibbling on snacks regularly. Don't miss your workout on a holiday. Actully try to set your alarm clock and wake up earlier to run or power walk and extra 3 miles. Another great tip, don't forget a protein snack to stave off hunger like a hard boiled egg, hummus with cucumber or a skinny slider --minus the bun all wrapped in lettuce-- they're convenient and yummy. 2) Make sure you workout while traveling and walk around as much as possible! If you are hanging out at the backyard baroque or the country club July 4th fiesta then skip the chair. Engage in conversation and focus on your friends and not the gooey pasta bowl or dessert. It's almost a given if you're on vacation you're going to do more walking than usual...but make a point of it. If you're lounging on a beach - don't just lie there - get up and walk around. Sitting by the pool, jump in and swim laps or simply walk in the water back and forth. And don't forget your Iso-Towel Workout - it'll go with you any where and can be done any time. If your host offers you a chair at the party say" no ". Then mingle, assist the host and dance, dance dance!! ![]() 3) Skip the buffet! Almost any place you stay offers a breakfast buffet. Tables, upon tables, of food piled high. Avoid the buffet, it's just too tempting. Even smart choices can get out of hand - say you promise to fill up on fruit. That should be good, right? Maybe, maybe not. Are you over eating? Fruit still has calories. It's why we advise, skip the buffet if you are not feeling in total control. If you choose the buffet focus on the greens, fruit and dishes that are prepared broiled with sauce on the side. 4) Drink plenty of water! Water is always good for you, but when you're on vacation it's doubly good. Flying in plane can dehydrate you and even family car trips can leave you thirsty and in need of a drink. Just make sure it's H20 and not alcohol. Water will also fill you up and keep you from getting hungry. Drink cold water, lots of ice if you can. The body has to spend energy to heat and digest the cold water - and every calorie burnt is one that won't stick around. People usually mean well, they're not trying to get you to cheat. They simply want you to have fun and enjoy yourself. So when they say "one piece of cake isn't going to hurt you," they mean well. But if you tell fellow travelers that you're trying to maintain your diet and want to continue to be healthy while on vacation you might be surprised. Those tempting offers will turn into support and maybe they'll eat better and workout with you. So don't try to hide your diet - celebrate it and share the goals with your family and friends. Usually they'll support you in your watching what you eat. Well except for your grandmother - you're always too thin to her. |
